Fantastic 1890s to early 1900s antique children's book with two of Lewis Carroll's classic stories that we all know and love!

Grosset & Dunlap, New York. Undated. Hardcover by Lewis Carroll with illustrations by John Tenniel. This is a very early antique children's book, printed by letterpress and before the custom of printing the publication dates. Our estimate is that this is from the late 1890s to the early 1900s. It features some fantastic black and white Tenniel illustrations, and contains the two separate stories of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, and, Through the Looking-Glass in one volume. This is hard to find combined into one edition.

One of the detail photos shows some creative typesetting that showcases the crazy poem, with its zigzag type pattern creating a curving and flowing page design. At the time, book pages were hand set with 'hot' type, or, cast metal letters, positioned one by one in trays that were then inked over to print the page. This was a very time consuming process, and a very nice high-end detail to include in the book at this time.

The outside cover shows some wear, but minimal considering its age. Corners are bumped and worn. The inside is clean with the pages being only slightly yellowed. A previous owner's name is stamped on the front pastedown and on the title page, and a tiny pencil price is on the front free endpaper. Endpaper is creased at the spine in front and back, showing the binding material. Otherwise, tight and clean throughout. A fabulous illustration is on the frontispiece, with several scattered throughout the book. The entire book is free of marks, other than on pages 220-221 in Through the Looking-Glass where there are a couple of juvenile scribbles.

A fun find, and a great addition to your vintage and antique book collection . . . one of the greatest stories ever imagined!
