Fantastic and unusual mid-century modern salt and pepper shakers with tray and wall mounted or free standing teapot shaped holder.

Wow! This is a wonderful retro Superlon hard plastic salt and pepper shaker set with a most unusual holder shaped like a teapot. This teapot holder has a recessed well which holds a condiment (or perhaps napkin) container. The salt and pepper shakers fit into this container for a very compact fit. The shakers also fit into this recessed area by themselves, while the container can be put to use separately at the meal for condiments. The teapot can stand alone on a table or counter, and it also features two holes for easy wall mounting. It measures 8 inches wide by 6.5 inches tall and is in very good vintage condition. The vintage plastic salt and pepper shakers are white with red tops, and the letters 'S' and 'P' are deeply embossed on their fronts. They each measure 3 inches tall by 1.25 inches square and are in excellent condition. The pepper shows a bit of spice residue. The condiment container measures 3.25 inches wide by 2.5 inches tall and is made of molded red plastic with a ribbed front and scalloped edges. It is in very good condition with one very small crack at the edge. There is some foliate decoration on the front of the teapot which shows some flaking, and there are a few minor light scratches from use. Manufactured by Superlon, Chicago, U.S.A. in the late 1940s and a similar style into the 1950s.

There are embossed marks on both the teapot and the condiment container. The teapot reads:

S.P. 5
SUPERLON
CHICAGO ILL
MADE IN U.S.A.
PAT. PEND

and on the condiment container:

S.P. 6
Superior Plastics
Chicago-12-
MADE IN U.S.A.
PAT. PEND

We have seen a couple of other similar sets like this one, but none of them have included the condiment container, and all of them have had a patent number and date of February 1950. Since this set is patent pending, we believe it was manufactured in the mid to late 1940s. Perhaps they decided not to include the condiment tray with the final patented product since it is never seen together with the other items. If so, this makes this earlier set quite rare and hard to find!

What a fabulous, whimsical, vintage plastic salt and pepper teapot holder condiment set!
