This is an excellent antique hand crafted Hawaiian milo wood bowl, inscribed on the bottom by the artisan Pat Corto, Honokaa Hawaii, 6-05-29, Milo. A superb, high quality, vintage Hawaiiana decor bowl or small calabash serving bowl.

This is a very scarce and wonderful example of antique Hawaiiana lathe turned wood craft. The inscription on the bottom makes this extra special! Honoka'a is a small plantation era town on the east side of Hawaii island, north of Hilo. Pat Corto was an established and active wood turner during the 1920s-1930s. We have seen some of his other pieces, and this one is quite fine.

This antique wood calabash bowl was turned from a solid piece of local milo wood. This fine bowl was expertly crafted, hand turned on a wood lathe and sanded to a smooth, silky finish. There are some lovely grain patterns and one small knot on the bottom which was filled. It was likely used as a small antique calabash serving bowl in its day, and could be put to good use at the dining table today. It measures 5 inches wide with a 4 inch diameter mouth and 3.5 inch rounded base. It stands 3 inches tall. It is in absolute mint condition with no chips, cracks, restorations, or other blemishes. There are some minor small light scratches on the bottom. It is very old and very rare, especially in this condition with the date and signature.

This antique hand lathe turned Hawaiian milo wood bowl will make a great addition to any antique Hawaiiana or wood bowl collection, and simply wonderful as a display bowl!
