Antique Foo Dog Bronze Incense Burner, Butsudan Incense Holder Sculpted Bronze with Foo Dog Finial & Handles, Asian Japanese Censor
Wonderful sculptural bronze incense burner featuring a classic foo dog finial and deeply embossed symbolic details on both sides of the bowl. Mid century, Japanese Butsudan.
This wonderful antique foo dog incense burner is very striking, featuring molded relief detailing throughout. The foo dog finial shows the foo with has paw on the play ball in classic pose. The ball represents the world or the home which the foo dog protects. Song birds and cherry blossom branches are molded on both sides of the base where he sits, with two holes in the lid to allow incense smoke to scent the air. The two handles are elephant heads, simple in form. The base has three feet.
It is heavy for its size, standing 3 inches tall. It is in wonderful antique condition with a lovely aged patina. It is cast bronze and is quite old. There is some minor light oxidation and some incense ash residue which can be seen in the photos. (We have left it as found, but the ash could easily be brushed away if desired.) This was purchased at a Buddhist temple fundraiser sale on the big island of Hawaii, in their collectibles boutique where many other temple items were sold.
What a fantastic antique Asian sculpted bronze foo dog incense burner, to use for decor, ceremony, or to grace any Butsudan altar!
