1940s Antique Hawaiian Wood Bowl, Milo Wood Hawaii Hand Turned Artisan Lathe Wood Bowl, Small Vintage Wooden Calabash Bowl, Signed S G
SALE . . . 20% OFF! This is an excellent small antique lathe turned Hawaiian milo wood bowl, inscribed on the bottom by with the artist's initials, SG. A superb, high quality, vintage Hawaiiana decor bowl or small calabash serving bowl. Circa 1940s.
This antique wood bowl was turned from a solid piece of local milo wood on Hawaii island, which has a long history of wood turners going back to the early part of the 20th century. There was a very active group in the Hamakua Coast area of East Hawaii from the 1920s-1940s.
Milo wood is very similar to the popular Hawaiian koa wood. It is hard to tell the difference, and we thank the artist for his provenance by inscribing "Milo" on the bottom! This fine bowl was expertly crafted, hand turned on a wood lathe and sanded to a smooth, silky finish. There are some lovely grain patterns throughout. It was likely used as a small antique calabash serving bowl in its day, and could be put to good use at the dining table today. It measures 4.25 inches wide with a 3.5 inch diameter mouth and stands 1.5 inches tall. It is in absolute mint condition with no chips, cracks, restorations, or other blemishes. It is quite old and hard to find in this condition with the inscribed details.
This antique hand lathe turned Hawaiian milo wood luau calabash bowl will make a great addition to any antique Hawaiiana or wood bowl collection, and simply wonderful as a display bowl!
