It is made of fine white porcelain ceramic, a large slightly footed handled bowl. The hand painted design is bright and flowing, with the colorful phoenix bird on one side, and the mystical red dragon on the other. The red Asian sun is in the center. The rim is in a classic Greek key pattern, with alternating, red, green, and yellow key elements. It is finished with symbolic scroll clouds and dragon's breath swirls.
The bottom shows two red butterflies (or moths) on the top and bottom. The center is stamped with a large red kanji chop mark, and also, "Made in Japan".
It measures 10 inches by 7 inches and stands 2 inches tall. It is in mint condition free of chips, cracks, or restorations. This is vintage porcelain restaurant ware, made in Japan in the Chinese style. It is similar to F.S. Louie Berkeley designs from the 1950s-1960s.
This wonderful, hard to find antique Chinese footed bowl will make a great addition to any vintage Asian dinnerware or vintage restaurant ware collection!
SIDE NOTE: The Dragon and Phoenix are two of the most powerful of the four Chinese celestial animals. Dragon is "yang" while Phoenix is "yin", and they complement each other in creating yin-yang balance. Originally in this case, for serving perfect meals of quality in mid century American restaurants!
