NIPPON PORCELAIN
We have some lovely antique Nippon porcelain in our collection, dating from the 1890s to 1920s. Genuine Nippon is nearly always hand painted and ornate in decoration with exquisite, delicate craftsmanship, often featuring finely painted floral foliate designs and serene landscapes. These unique pieces can include gorgeous 24k gilt highlights, scrolling designs, or Coralene beading. The porcelain is very fine and lightweight. The bottom is almost always backstamped, under the glaze.
The Nippon era began in 1891 when new U.S. laws required that imported porcelain be clearly marked with the country of origin. Nippon is the native name for Japan and was accepted usage at that time. This beautiful decorative porcelain was made specifically for export to the west featuring designs that appealed to Americans and western Europeans. In 1921 the U.S. laws changed again, requiring that Japanese imports be marked in English, as 'Japan' instead of Nippon, the official end of the Nippon era. Marked antique pieces of this time frame are quite popular and sought after.
